Spotlight on Bunya Red Farm For a Fantastic Camping Getaway
As the sun peeked over the horizon at Bunya Red Farm and extended its welcoming rays towards our tent, a chorus of “buck-wheat, buck-wheat, buck-wheat” could be heard.
Did I hear that right?
It sounds like chickens trying to actually talk human words. But why would they say that? Half asleep, I put it down to that weird moment where you sometimes don’t know if you are asleep or awake just before waking up.
The unmistakenly odd sound of a chicken attempting to say, “buck-wheat, buck-what, buck-wheat” was heard again. I was awake this time. Better go check it out.
The kids were already peeking out of the tent window. I unzipped the front and poked my head out to look around Bunya Red Farm.
Oh, that explains it. They’re not chickens … they’re guinea fowl! Looking something like a cross between a chicken and a turkey and much more vocal, the female guinea fowls sound like they are compulsively repeating the word ”buck-wheat” over and over again. At least 20 of them are waddling across Bunya Red Farm, past our tent and towards the cow paddock. Where they go from there is a mystery, but they are back again every morning to repeat the same routine.
It’s a glorious way to start the day!

About Bunya Red Farm
Located on the outskirts of Kingaroy in Queensland, Bunya Red Farm is 160 acres of rolling, rural scenery with the Bunya Mountains off in the distance. The morning fog settles in the dips, giving the illusion of a blanket of snow that disappears soon after the sun rises. In contrast, strangely beautiful twinkling nights can be spotted at night far off in the distance. No, it’s not some strange UFO phenomenon, rather it’s lights on wind turbines from a wind farm. Both scenes are blissfully soothing and a pleasant way to both begin and finish the day.
Alongside the guinea fowl are gentle cattle, beautiful fluffy alpacas, two friendly farm dogs and a three-legged cat. The farm grows capers and is the only farm to do so commercially in Queensland. Besides the capers, corn crops and peanuts can also be found growing here.
Facilities at Bunya Red Farm
Bunya Red Farm is suitable for most camping set-ups from swags through to self-sufficient caravans. We stayed in an under-awning tent for our stay and were very comfortable.
The facilities at Bunya Red Farm are excellent. On par with a caravan park but with much more pleasant surrounds, lots of green grass, and without the annoyance of having to camp close enough to your neighbour that you can hear their bodily functions. Being a private camp facility through HipCamp, there is a LOT of space between campers.
If you are not self-sufficient with a toilet and shower, there is an option to book the shower and toilet block (hot and flushing) exclusively. You will be given a key to your own amenities and they are really quite lovely. More importantly, they are spotless!
There is an excellent communal fire pit with a great windbreak and plenty of wood, picnic tables and chairs, and even a camp kitchen.
