How to Get From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
(or Vice-Versa)
So, you’ve landed in Cambodia, checked out the bustling capital for a few days, and now you’re wondering how to get from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap.
Or maybe you’ve explored the ancient temples of Angkor and are now wondering how to do it in reverse, Siem Reap to Phnom Penh.
Either way, it’s easy peasy and there is a transport style to suit every budget and comfort level.
Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
Here’s How to do it!
Take the BIG Bus
I say BIG bus to differentiate this option between the mini-buses and vans. When it comes to big busses that run between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (and vice-versa), the two most popular are the Giant Ibis and Virak Buntham Express.
The trip takes around 5.5 – 7 hours and Giant Ibis seems to have the best reputation, basing their travels around safety and offering air-con and power outlets. The Giant Ibis bus runs both day and night and includes a stop for the toilet and food.
- Compare and book both the Giant Ibis and Virak Buntham Express here.
- Book the Giant Ibis between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap here.
The benefit of taking the big bus is the low cost and the glimpse of Cambodian country life as you roll on past water buffalo, rice paddies and traditional houses.
Book a Private Car
Booking a private car between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is a great option for families who don’t want the expense of plane tickets. The trip will take around 4 – 6 hours depending on traffic.
The huge benefit of a private car is that it can pick you up directly from your hotel and drop you wherever you wish in Siem Reap. You will have the vehicle to yourself (besides the driver) and can request to stop for a toilet break or food whenever you wish.

Hire a Mini Bus or Van
Mini-buses take around 5 – 6 hours and are suitable for large families or those with lots of luggage. If you book a mini-van and there are not many of you, don’t be surprised if your driver stops and picks up extra passengers along the way.
They will also pick you up directly from your hotel and if you have the van to yourself, should be able to request a toilet and food break when required.

Jump on a Plane
The plane is probably the most convenient option to travel between the two cities as the journey time is only around 45 minutes. However, its also by far the most expensive.
The domestic airports in both cities are not large so waiting time is usually not too long. Although the flights we have taken ran on time, I’m told it’s not uncommon for the planes to be delayed by several hours … making you wish you chose another option.
Transfer via Luxury Ferry Boat
If you have the time, the Mekong Tara Prince Ferry Boat is a nice option to see a different side of Cambodia between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It’s a luxurious vehicle that was once owned by the Prince of Cambodia!
Pick up from your hotel is included in the price as well as a meal and drinks. The only downside to this option is that in addition to around 4.5 hours on the water, there is also a drive of around 3.5 hours overland. Although this could be a great time to take a nap!
