Despite a reputation for being a little pricey, there are still lots of accommodation options for families on a budget … or families who would prefer to save their money for great experiences instead.
We found a great hotel called the Tai Hoe Hotel Singapore which we think is the best budget family hotel in Singapore!
The Tai Hoe Hotel Singapore
Our Top Pick for Best Budget Family Hotel in Singapore
The Tai Hoe Hotel in Singapore was built in the 1940’s, before trains, shopping complexes and even Little India made its wonderful mark on Singapore.
The inn has lived through World War II and the recession, passing from one generation to the next. It was developed into a modern hotel in 1996 and today, opens its doors to budget travellers, families, wandering writers and business people.
The Location
The Tai Hoe Hotel’s best feature is its location! Little India with its vibrancy, great shopping, incense and food is right next door. An international shopping complex with movies, shops and plenty of food options is directly across the road.
There is a train station accessible from the mall across the street, placing your family within walking distance of Singapore’s clockwork MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system.
The Rooms
Budget accommodation in Singapore means small rooms … there is no getting around it. On the plus side, the rooms are clean, have a flat-screen TV, air conditioning and an ensuite.
There are dedicated family rooms at the Tai Hoe Hotel in Singapore however none were available when we booked and we made do quite comfortably in a room with a double and a single bed.
I had a desk by the window to put my work computer, a mini-fridge to keep drinks and snacks and everyone happily used the beds as a lounge to watch TV. Not much room … no big deal.
The Staff
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and I loved that they went out of their way to make the kids feel welcome. Basically we experienced good old fashioned customer service and it was great.
The kids loved it because the reception staff always had a lollypop or chocolate to give them when we headed back to the room in the afternoon!
Facilities
As a budget hotel, you won’t find a spa or a rooftop pool, but the most important thing works great … the WiFi!! It’s free, reliable and we were able to use more than one device at once.
Meals
The Tai Hoe Hotel in Singapore doesn’t offer meals however there is a restaurant right across the road and of course, a large shopping centre diagonally across the road with a multitude of great cafes, takeaways and restaurants.
