Best Beaches in Oahu for Families (That We Actually Swam At)

Looking for the best beaches in Oahu for families? You’re in luck – this Hawaiian island is packed with incredible spots to swim, snorkel and explore with kids. While this list focuses on family-friendly beaches, many of these are also among the best beaches on Oahu overall.

From easy swimming beaches near Waikiki to snorkelling bays and iconic North Shore stops, these are the places we actually visited as a family. Not just the ones that look good on a map.

Not all of these beaches are perfectly calm, and that’s kind of the point. We’ve included a mix of easy swim spots, snorkelling beaches, and a few places that are better for sand play or watching the surf, depending on the conditions.

Quick answer: What are the best beaches in Oahu for families?

For easy swimming and family-friendly conditions, we loved Ala Moana Beach Park, the Hilton Lagoon and Ko Olina Lagoons.

For snorkelling, Hanauma Bay is a standout, while the Windward Coast and North Shore are better for exploring, sand play and watching the surf.

Short on time? Here’s how to choose:

  • Want easy swimming -> Ala Moana or Hilton Lagoon
  • Want a full beach day → Ko Olina Lagoons
  • Want snorkelling → Hanauma Bay
  • Want scenery → Windward Coast

Ala Moana Beach Park: Best all-round beach for families

Ala Moana Beach Park is a free public park right near Waikiki. It’s perfect for younger kids as the water is clear and calm.  It also doesn’t seem to be as crowded as the main Waikiki beach.  I can’t work out why, though, because it’s much nicer!

This is my top pick of the best swimming beaches in Oahu with kids, as it’s conveniently located near all the shopping and amenities of Waikiki.

  • Best for: Easy swimming near Waikiki.
  • Why families like it: Calm, clear water with plenty of space to spread out, plus it feels less hectic than Waikiki.
  • Good to know: There’s a reef offshore that helps keep the water gentler, making it a great option for younger kids.
  • Facilities: Toilets, showers, shaded areas and nearby shops.

Hilton Lagoon: Easiest swimming spot near Waikiki

best beaches Oahu Hilton Lagoon

The Hilton Lagoon is a human-made lagoon (free and open to the public) in front of the well-known Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.

I’m not usually a fan of human-made when it comes to beaches and swimming, but this Oahu swimming spot is perfect for kids as the water is calm with a gradual slope towards a deeper section in the middle.  There are snack shops and facilities nearby.

If the water temperature was not noticeably cooler than the ocean, this would be my top pick for the best beach in Oahu with kids (even if it’s not technically a traditional beach).  If you bring a picnic rug and set up around the lagoon on a Friday evening, you will get a great view of the Friday night Hilton fireworks display.

  • Best for: Very easy swimming with younger kids.
  • Why families like it: It’s a protected lagoon with a gradual entry, so it’s one of the easiest places for kids to swim.
  • Good to know: The water can feel a little cooler than the ocean, but it’s still a great option for a relaxed swim.
  • Facilities: Toilets, food outlets and plenty of space to sit nearby.

Ko Olina Lagoons: Best beach day with younger kids

Ko Olina Beach Park – Lagoon © Jessica Palmer

The Ko Olina Beach Park is worth a visit! However, you will need some form of transportation to get there, as it’s located on a part of the island that isn’t particularly central to anything.

We spent a day exploring the Wai’Anae Coast of Oahu and paid a visit to these four white-sand lagoon beaches, which are open to the public.

  • Best for: A full beach day with younger kids.
  • Why families like it: These man-made lagoons are sheltered from waves and have soft sand and calm conditions.
  • Good to know: It’s a bit of a drive from Waikiki, so plan to spend a few hours here rather than just popping in.
  • Facilities: Toilets, showers, grassy areas and nearby resorts.

Hanauma Bay: Best for snorkelling with kids

Snorkelling at Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is one of the best beaches in Oahu for snorkelling with kids, but it does require a little planning. Entry is paid for non-residents, parking is limited, and booking ahead is recommended – especially during busy periods.

There is also a snack bar, gift shop and facilities here. Catch the regular tram if you’re not inclined to walk down the steep path to the water.

  • Best for: Snorkelling with kids.
  • Why families like it: Clear water and lots of fish make it a great place for kids to try snorkelling.
  • Good to know: You’ll need to book ahead and arrive early, as entry numbers are limited and parking fills quickly.
  • Facilities: Toilets, snack bar, gear hire and tram access down to the beach.

Waikiki Beach: Most convenient family beach

I thought Waikiki Beach was nice, but it didn’t live up to the hype for me. Probably because it was too similar to the beaches back home in Australia. I found it hard not to be tempted by the Hilton Lagoon nearby, as the sand was nicer.

Whilst not one of my absolute favourite beaches in Oahu, it’s still a fantastic place to cool off due to the location. We loved floating on our backs with the famous Diamond Head and resort buildings in the background against the blue sky.

  • Best for: Convenience and quick swims.
  • Why families like it: It’s right near most hotels, with easy access and everything you need close by.
  • Good to know: It can get crowded, so it’s better for a quick dip rather than a full beach day.
  • Facilities: Toilets, showers, food outlets and plenty of hire options.

Windward Coast beaches: Best for exploring and scenery

I thought all of the beaches on the Windward Coast were just beautiful, particularly if we’re talking about the colour of the water. There is plenty of sand for younger kids who aren’t yet ready for the waves. Just hire a car, or take a bus and go exploring these Oahu beaches on your own.

  • Best for: Exploring and scenery.
  • Why families like it: These beaches have stunning blue water and lots of space for sand play.
  • Good to know: Conditions vary depending on the day, so check before swimming, especially with kids.
  • Facilities: Vary depending on the beach.

Waimea Bay and Pipeline: Best for watching the surf

North Shore Beaches © Jessica Palmer

Unless you are a surfing family, the North Shore beaches in Oahu might be a little too much for young kids. However, I still want to include this as we had a fantastic time just playing in the sand on the shoreline and watching the surfers. In addition, some days are calmer than others; it’s just that we happened to visit on a day when the swell was really pumping.

We would all love to see this in action during big wave season!

  • Best for: Watching the surf and playing on the sand.
  • Why families like it: It’s an iconic part of Oahu and great for seeing big waves and surfers in action.
  • Good to know: These beaches can be rough, especially in winter, so swimming isn’t always suitable for kids.
  • Facilities: Basic facilities are available at some locations.

Waimea Falls: A freshwater swim worth adding to your day

Although technically not a beach, whilst you are visiting the North Shore, make sure you take the short 20-minute walk to Waimea Falls through the lovely Waimea Valley. It’s a great swimming spot! There’s an entrance fee, but it’s well worth it due to the beautifully maintained grounds.

Snack shop and facilities are also available. When you reach the falls, you’ll find a lifeguard on duty as well as life jackets for use.

  • Best for: A unique freshwater swim.
  • Why families like it: It’s something different from the beach, with a short walk through a beautiful valley.
  • Good to know: There’s an entry fee, but lifeguards and life jackets are provided at the falls.
  • Facilities: Toilets, snack shop and maintained walking paths.

If we had to pick just one best beach in Oahu…

Oahu might be known for its world-class surf, but there’s no shortage of safe, family-friendly places to swim. Other popular beaches in Oahu include Lanikai Beach (famous for its views) and Kailua Beach (great for kayaking and space to spread out).

If we had to pick just one, Ala Moana Beach Park was our favourite all-round beach in Oahu for families. It’s easy to get to, it’s great for swimming, and just felt more relaxed than Waikiki.

That said, if your kids are keen to snorkel, Hanauma Bay is hard to beat, and if you want a full beach day, Ko Olina Lagoons are well worth the drive. The beauty of Oahu is that you don’t have to choose just one. You can mix and match depending on what kind of beach day you feel like.

Whether you’re after a calm lagoon near the action of Waikiki or a peaceful beach on the Windward Coast, you’ll find plenty of spots that are perfect for kids. These were our favourites for swimming and relaxing as a family, and in our opinion, they’re some of the best beaches Oahu has to offer.

Happy splashing!

A quick note on Oahu beach safety

Oahu beaches can change dramatically depending on the season and swell. A beach that looks calm one day can be rough the next, especially on the North Shore. Always check conditions, swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible, and follow local advice.
