The Mountview Alpaca Farm on the Gold Coast – You’ll Love This Fantastic Picnic Spot

It was love at first sight at Mountview Alpaca Farm in the Gold Coast hinterlands. Brandy was led out first, followed by her doting mum. I knew that baby alpacas (crias) were cute, but Brandy took it to a whole new level. We all fell in love with her with big, glistening eyes and fluffy, brown, luxurious fur. In fact, we are all now huge alpaca fans!

Having enjoyed the Macca the Alpaca children’s book series for quite some time, we were delighted to be told that Brandy’s mum was actually named Macca and that we could spend some time with them both in the vineyards.

Canungra Valley Vineyards in the Gold Coast hinterlands is set in a stunning location with a charming yet modern homestead and the beautiful Canungra Creek flowing through the property. The Mountview Alpaca Farm was moved to the vineyards in 2018 from its previous location in Lamington National Park.

Easily reached only 6 minutes from Canungra, visitors no longer need to embark on a long mountain drive to spend some time with the Alpacas. It’s also only around 25mins from the Gallery Walk on Mount Tamborine,

Visitors can not only feed and walk the alpacas around the vineyard grounds and alongside the creek, but can also “level up” the experience by ordering a picnic basket from the Canungra Valley Vineyard homestead. The picnic can be enjoyed anywhere on the grounds but I recommend taking it right beside the creek.

We chose to spend some times with the Alpacas before having our picnic so headed straight to the Alpaca gift shop to check-in. We were given two bags of Alpaca food, some instructions, and got to spend 30 minutes enjoying their company.

While the weather is cooler from around April to September, the Alpacas will be covered in thick, fluffy fur. However, from around October to March they sport a summer haircut and look very styled. Just for fun, check out the Alpaca photo album on the Mountview Alpaca Farm’s website here 🙂

What We Thought of Our Alpaca Picnic at The Mountview Alpaca Farm on the Gold Coast

As that I was visiting on my own with the kids, we experienced the alpaca picnic for two. The family deal would have been too much food for myself and two picky eaters! The gourmet picnic hamper was amazing and the kids were excited to score the two ice-creams which we ate by Canungra Creek.

Hanging out with the Alpacas was a truly memorable experience and I got some cute pictures of the kids. However, the 30 minutes went really quick cause they are really fun to be around. When it was time to give them back, I desperately wanted to bundle them up and take them home.

The whole experience was carefree and a whole lot of fun. This is an amazing experience for all ages and can be enjoyed by friends, families, couples and groups alike. These experiences would make a great gift for someone!

Some Cool Stuff About The Mountview Alpaca Farm on The Gold Coast

The Mountview Alpaca Farm is leading a new program (an Australian first) by training some of their alpacas as therapy animals to visit hospitals and aged care facilities. The program kicked off in mid-2018 at Beaudesert Hospital, visiting the Brisbane Children’s Hospital in the same year. You can even sponsor a therapy Alpca to help with the training and feeding. More information about this can be found here.

Gold Coast family holiday resources

Best time to visit the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is really an all-year-round holiday destination. However, it gets pretty busy during the summer school holidays.

December to February sees tropical weather with more chance of rain. Many tout April and May as a great time to visit due to lower rainfall, but I personally find the ocean a bit too chilly at this time.

Where to stay

If staying in Burleigh Heads, Swell Resort is a fantastic option for families with roomy apartment-style offerings. The resort is set close to restaurants, only 100 metres from the beach. This is my top pick for the Gold Coast.

If staying in the Gold Coast Hinterlands, you can’t go past Binna Burra Lodge or O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Both offer a range of accommodations.

If you’re looking for a family resort with everything to occupy the kids, NRMA Treasure Island and Paradise Resort are top choices.

Those seeking luxury will love the Gold Coast Marriott or The Star.

Getting to the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is located one hour south of Brisbane on the East Coast of Australia.

Both domestic and international flights service the Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta. Find a great deal on Trip.com

The Gold Coast is connected by rail to Brisbane’s Roma Street and Central stations. There is also an AirTrain that runs a regular rail service taking around 90 minutes.

Getting around the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has an extensive bus service with over 60 routes within the city. If venturing to the Gold Coast Hinterlands, hiring a car is an excellent option if you don’t have your own.
