Arthurs Seat Eagle

Soar Like an Eagle on This Great Day Out in Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula

Experience the best seat in the house at Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula on the Arthurs Seat Eagle, a swiss made aerial gondola ‘’flight’’ suitable for all ages and abilities.

‘’Hello!’’ my kids yelled out in unison to the passing gondola.  ‘’Hello!’’ came the echo back from a waving, excited little girl as we passed each other high up in the air.

They sat down and waited for the next one.  The gentle breeze tickling my face through the bars of the gondola was divine, a breath of fresh on a scorching Melbourne day. I closed my eyes to enjoy the sensation. But only for a brief second, as the views were exceptional and I didn’t want to miss it.

From the highest point of the Arthurs Seat Eagle Gondola ride, the views stretch from Port Phillip Bay and The Mornington Peninsula across to Melbourne City and beyond.

The serenity was broken by my kids once again, this time yelling, ‘’Mum, look there’s a kangaroo!’’

Don’t Forget to Look Down as Well!

I shifted my gaze away from the view to peer down and sure enough, bounding below in the state forest were three kangaroos.  After six or so massive leaps of the kangaroo kind, they stopped to graze. Despite seeing many kangaroos in my own backyard over the past few years, I never tire of seeing them in their natural environment. Seems my kids are still enthralled too.

Unfortunately, the kangaroos had moved on by the time we made the return trip, but we were lucky enough to spot not one, but two Wedge Tailed Eagles soaring the skies, and countless other birds flittering about. Although none as majestic as the eagles in which the gondolas are named after.

The ‘’Arthurs Seat’’ part of the name comes from the hill it’s built upon, named Arthurs Seat Hill by the first British explorers who entered Port Phillip Bay in 1802.  It was named due to its resemblance to Arthurs Seat Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Captain Matthrew Flinders, the first European to scale Arthurs Seat left his ship’s name on a scroll of paper, in a small pile of stones at the top of the peak.  This was a British tradition of creating a stone cairn that marks a historical location.  The Matthew Flinders Cairn has since been enlarged and can be viewed via an easy walk from the Eagle Summit Station.
