Brisbane Comic Con is the ultimate in family fun! Celebrate the best of entertainment and pop-culture at Oz Comic Con’s annual events, held in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

The event is incredibly family-friendly and features main areas of comics, movies and television, animation and anime, gaming and costuming. There is lots to see and do for parents as well as kids.

You don’t have to dress up to attend Brisbane Comic Con, but it’s a lot more fun if you do!

Family-Friendly Activities at Brisbane Comic Con

Join the Kids Cosplay Parade

The kids’ cosplay parade at Brisbane Comic-Con was the highlight for my pair. They surprised me with their confidence and I haven’t laughed that much in ages.

Dress up the kids in a character costume they love and let them loose on stage! They will be introduced, invited to do a pose and a certificate is handed out at the end. There is also an adults cosplay but I’m all about this kids in this post.

If kids are a little shy, they can go on stage with siblings, with a group or with a guardian. Make sure to check out my YouTube clip at the bottom of this post to see it in action!

Spaces are limited so closer to the event, find out what day it’s on, and head to the designated area to sign them up as soon as you arrive.

Learn How to Create Comics at Comic District

Comic District is just cool…I think I liked it more than my kids! Attend a workshop specially designed for kids on comic creation, and watch comic guest panels which include live drawings to kick start a passion for comics.

There are bean bags, a range of comics to read and a giant comic cover for epic selfies with the kids.

Chill Out at the Anime Screenings

The Anime station has a wide range of titles, including all the favourites such as Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. The full list of screenings becomes available closer to the date so it’s worth checking this out to make sure they’re watching something age-appropriate.

There are beanbags and headphones so the Anima station is a great area to head to at Brisbane Comic Con when everyone starts getting a little weary.

Play Games in the Gaming Zone

The gaming zone at Brisbane Comic Con is a whole lot of fun! There are game tournaments and a console freeplay area for the whole family.

It’s a great opportunity to try out new games or relive old ones. In our case, it was a great opportunity to see if they liked the Nintendo Switch before we bought one for the family back home.

Mario Kart and Just Dance were a huge hit! Make sure you check out the YouTube clip towards the end of this post to see Just Dance in action.

Make Your Mark on the Comic Wall

The Marvel comic wall is a genius idea and I’ve been researching whiteboard paint for a wall in our house ever since. I just have to get my husband on board with the idea!

The Comic Wall is a huge wall mural filled with Marvel characters that kids can colour in with markers. I had trouble dragging Trillian away from it and it nearly resulted in a public argument between siblings when she gleefully coloured over Ripley’s section.

SHE thought it was funny!

Stroll Around and Become Part of the Action

Strolling around Brisbane Comic Con is entertaining and there are plenty of opportunities to become part of the action.

Interact with wandering characters, take awesome photographs with epic props, check out the merchandise or purchase something unique in artist alley.

Essential Information for Your Brisbane Family Holiday

Best time to visit Brisbane

April and May is often touted as the best time to visit as the weather is mild and you can avoid school holiday crowds. However, it’s not hot enough to swim during these months which is a real downer for me.

Timing your Brisbane holiday with the Brisbane festival in September is a great idea. Although more crowded, there is HEAPS going on in and around the city, including the Riverfire fireworks.

Where to stay in Brisbane

We loved the Brisbane City YHA for its location and value for money. If you wish to cook for yourself, the communal kitchen is massive, and it also features a games room and a rooftop pool and bar. There are some decent options for families here.

If five-star luxury with all the works is more your style, find a great deal on bookings.com here!

Getting around Brisbane

There are a number of options for getting around Brisbane but first things first – let’s get from the airport to your hotel!

Public transport

Brisbane Visitors can purchase a cashless ticket called the Go Card which can be used on the city’s buses, trains, CityCats and ferry services. Get your card from the Brisbane Visitor Information Centre or at most local news agencies.

The Translink Journey Planner or Google Maps can be used to plan your route.

Hop-on Hop-off Bus

The Hop-on Hop-off Bus is a tourist bus that stops at 15 major locations throughout Brisbane. Tickets are valid for 24 or 48 hours from first use and you basically just hop on and off when you feel like it. Family passes are available.

City loop bus

The City Loop Bus is free and runs every 10 minutes, stopping at popular spots throughout its loop. More information on the City Loop Bus can be found here.

Bicycle hire

If the kids are old enough to peddle on their own, visit one of the 150 CityCycle hire stations to get around. This is a fun option for older kids!

Car hire

Compare car rental prices across major brands here. Be aware that unless your hotel offers parking, you will pay a small fortune to house the vehicle overnight.

Taxi

Taxi ranks can be found at the Brisbane international and domestic airports, as well as throughout Brisbane City.
