Exploring Great Keppel Island just got a whole lot easier for families, with the launch of GKI Boat Hire, a new no-licence-required boat rental service on the island.
For years, visitors have loved Great Keppel Island’s laid-back vibe, clear water and beautiful bays – but getting to some of the quieter beaches and snorkelling spots often meant joining a tour or hiking in with your gear. GKI Boat Hire fills that gap, offering small, stable boats that are easy to operate and don’t require a boating licence.
A new way to explore Great Keppel Island
The idea behind GKI Boat Hire was born from firsthand experience. Owner-operator Theo George has spent the past eight years working at Great Keppel Island Holiday Village, helping visitors navigate island life and logistics.
Over time, a clear pattern emerged.
“It became clear that many people wanted an option between a full-scale charter and a rigid ferry service,” Theo said. “Our boats are simple to operate and perfect for accessing those quieter bays or setting up snorkelling, research or community activities.”
The result is a fleet of user-friendly boats designed with safety, stability and versatility in mind.

Why families will love it
For families visiting Great Keppel Island, this opens up a whole new layer of adventure.
Instead of planning your day around tour schedules or hiking into the best snorkelling spots, you can:
- Explore sheltered bays at your own pace
- Set up snorkelling sessions when the kids are ready (and not overtired)
- Access quieter beaches away from the main ferry drop-off points
- Enjoy a sense of independence while still staying close to shore
Because the boats don’t require a licence, they’re approachable for first-time boat users and families who want a relaxed, low-pressure experience on the water.
Not just for tourists
While families and day-trippers will be big beneficiaries, GKI Boat Hire also supports local organisations, volunteer groups and environmental researchers who need reliable access around the island without the cost or complexity of larger vessels.
Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll says the business is a welcome addition to the region’s marine tourism offering.
“Small, purpose-built ventures like this help us grow responsibly while giving visitors more ways to connect with the Southern Great Barrier Reef,” she said.
