Legoland Discovery Centre Melbourne

”MUUUUMMMMMM It’s an EARTHQUAKE!” squealed both kids simultaneously. ”AGGHHHHHHHHH!”

The lego table they were working on began to shake. They began to count … ”1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 8” …

”This time is stayed up for EIGHT SECONDS!” my son said loudly.

”Yeah, that was the best one yet!” replied my daughter.

The ”earthquake” they were so excited about was actually a simulation table at Legoland Melbourne. Kids build a lego tower and when they are ready to test their design, create an ”earthquake” with the press of a button. They can even control the magnitude of the quake!

The ”earthquake” table at Legoland Melbourne

It was just one of the many great interactive exhibits at Legoland, Melbourne. I could almost see their little brains working hard to find a solution! Sure enough, they soon worked out they needed a tower with a sturdy base to withstand an earthquake.

The Legoland Discovery Centre in Melbourne is designed specifically for families with children aged 3-10 years of age. Being honest, even I enjoyed the exhibits (who doesn’t like lego?) and I’m … ermm… three decades past the recommended age.

Umm … I LOVE Lego … Can Adults Play Too?

With the exception of Adult Night events, adults must be accompanied by a child to visit Legoland, Melbourne

What’s Inside Legoland Melbourne

Miniland

Miniland is one of the coolest things inside Legoland Melbourne and adults will appreciate it just as much as kids. Made from over 1.5 million lego pieces, Miniland is a miniature replica of Melbourne’s iconic buildings. Keep an eye out for Federation Square, the MCG, Flemington Racecourse, Luna Park and more.

The entire room changes from day to night every five minutes or so and when night time comes, expect to see Mini-Melbourne from a whole new perspective. There are even fireworks! (Projected on the wall … not real ones).

The displays are interactive and although you can’t touch them, you can press buttons to make them do cool things. Crawl under a display and pop your head up inside a tube to see it from a different perspective.

Fun Fact – It took a team of 15 expert model builders over 5,000 hours to build …. Also, how does one get THAT job? … (asking for a friend).

Lego Racers Build and Test

If you were to ask my son (aged 7) what his favourite thing about Legoland Melbourne was, he would say it was testing lego race cars.

This is seriously a great idea!

Kids grab lego pieces and various lego vehicle parts and create their own custom vehicle. They have two options to test them out, both of them are fun!

Line them up on a racetrack alongside other cars, and with the press of a button, a barrier drops down ensuring that all of the cars take off at the same time. They can also race their car down an extremely steep hill, climbing little kiddy size steps to reach the top.

Expect the car to explode into lego pieces the first few times it crashes into the wall. The kids seem to work it out after a few goes of rebuilding it though!

Earthquake Tables

These are the best! An earthquake simulation table to test the sturdiness of your lego build. Basically, kids build a great big tower and press the ”earthquake” button beside their table. They learn by experimenting on how to build a sturdy tower.

We had great fun at this table until my daughter (aged 4), worked out she could torture her brother by pressing the button when he wasn’t ready.

Soft Play Area

This was by far, my daughter’s favourite attraction at Legoland Melbourne. It’s basically one of those indoor play areas where everything is padded and it’s chock full of climbing things and slides.

Children MUST be wearing socks at all times. If you didn’t bring socks (like us), you can buy some pretty cool lego branded ones from the cafe.

If your kids are independent enough to play on their own, you can sit down and take a breather here!

Merlins Apprentice Ride

This is a fun ride for kids in which you are strapped into a seat and have to pedal while the ride goes round and round. Actually, you don’t have to pedal, but if you do, your ride goes higher up in the air.

Children must be a minimum of 90cm, and an adult must ride with them if they’re between 90cms and 120cms. The ride doesn’t go for very long so even if there is a line-up, you don’t have to wait too long.

Lego 4D Cinemas

We ALL loved this one at Legoland Melbourne! At first, it’s like an ordinary 3D film, but then it becomes 4D with the experience of snow, wind and rain … all indoors.

There are a number of different movies that rotate every 20 minutes through the day. This means you can go back and watch more than one if you wish. We watched The Lego Movie: 4D – A New Adventure, and were all entertained from start to finish.

Kingdom Quest

I’m putting my hand up to say this was my favourite part of Legoland Melbourne!

This is a really cool chariot ride in which the kids sit in the front and everyone is given a plastic laser gun. As the chariot moves slowly through the tunnel, shoot baddies in an attempt to rescue the captured princess.

There are trolls, skeletons, spiders and all sorts of bad-guys that you really don’t mind zapping.

All children must have at least one adult ride with them and all riders must be able to sit upright unaided. Height restrictions apply but it’s not a ridiculous height as my four-year-old was able to ride.

Lego Friends

The Lego Friends section is totally aimed at girls, with lots of soft colours and a city called ‘Heartlake City’. There are five characters around the room, each with different personalities, and tables with instructions on making small projects.

This was probably my least favourite section of Legoland Melbourne, just because I have a personal distaste for girlying things up too much. However, my little girl did like the purple and pink lego pieces!

Duplo Farm Adventures

The Duplo Farm Adventures is for younger kids aged 2-5 years, designed to inspire interactive social play. It looks great with giant barn doors, a farmhouse to climb, crawl and slide through and life-size Duplo animals.

We didn’t play here as there were a lot of younger kids so I sent mine back over to the other soft-play area. I think if they were a couple of years younger it would have been a winner!

Discover the Deep – Underwater Quest

Discover the Deep has some of my favourite lego builds in Legoland Melbourne, including a lego-man dressed in a shark suit and some elaborate under-water themed pieces.

The room is dimly lit with lighting that gives off an underwater feel. In this room, you can snap a selfie with the shark suit man and complete the starfish build. There are some non-standard lego pieces in great colours in this room!

What About Food and Other Stuff at Legoland Melbourne?

There is a Lego-themed cafe that you can’t miss, it’s basically located in the centre of Legoland Melbourne. The cafe has a really decent selection of healthy options for kids as well as indulgent yummies like cupcakes.

Encourage your kids to save their pocket money before you visit as the Lego retail store is pretty neat! This store is Victoria’s only stockist of the full Lego range and has some fantastic projects for all-sized wallets. You can find lots of themed projects such as Lego Frozen, Lego Harry Potter and Lego Star Wars.

Legoland Melbourne Tickets

During peak times, Legoland Melbourne limits the total number of guest in the centre and limits the time within the centre to three hours. In off-peak times guests can spend as long as they like.

For this reason, it’s recommended you buy your tickets online to guarantee entry!
