Royal Caribbean Lelepa

Royal Caribbean’s New Private Island in Vanuatu: What It Means for Aussie Families

Royal Caribbean has just dropped a big announcement for Aussie travellers and it’s not just another cruise itinerary. From 2027, the cruise giant will open Royal Beach Club Lelepa, a brand-new private island destination in Vanuatu designed specifically for guests sailing from Australia and New Zealand.

And while it sounds like just another tropical stopover, this is actually something much bigger.

A first for the Southern Hemisphere

Lelepa will be Royal Caribbean’s first exclusive cruise destination in the South Pacific and the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Cruise lines have been building private island destinations for years (especially in the Caribbean), but this marks a shift closer to home for Aussie travellers. Instead of relying solely on existing ports, cruise companies are now creating fully controlled, experience-driven destinations.

What to expect at Royal Beach Club Lelepa

So what does that actually look like for families?

According to Royal Caribbean, Lelepa is being designed as an all-inclusive “ultimate beach day” experience, featuring:

  • Two beaches (including a family-friendly zone and an adults-only retreat)
  • Snorkelling, kayaking and a nature trail
  • Friendly competitions and activities for kids and families
  • 10 bars and all-inclusive island dining
  • Included extras like loungers, umbrellas and towels

It sounds like it’s going to be less “quick island stop” and more resort-style beach day without leaving your cruise. Here’s a sneak peek video on what to expect:

When can you go?

Lelepa will be included on South Pacific cruises departing from Sydney and Brisbane from October 2027.

Ships confirmed so far include:

  • Anthem of the Seas (Sydney departures)
  • Voyager of the Seas (Brisbane departures)

Cruises will range from short 2-3 night getaways to longer itineraries across the South Pacific and New Zealand.

Why this matters (beyond just another cruise stop)

Cruise lines are doubling down on Aussie families

Royal Caribbean has made it clear that the Australian market is a priority. More short cruises, more flexible itineraries and now, a dedicated destination designed with Aussie travellers in mind. This signals a long-term play.

The rise of controlled holiday experiences

Private destinations like Lelepa allow cruise lines to control the experience, food and pricing, activities and overall quality. For families, this often means less planning, fewer unexpected costs and a more seamless day out.

It blurs the line between cruising and resort holidays

This could potentially be the start of a big shift. Instead of having to choose between a cruise and a tropical island resort, you’re essentially getting both in the one trip. Given that Aussie families are now more than ever looking for maximum value (see our 2026 Key Aussie Travel Trends), that could be quite a compelling sell.

Will it be worth the hype?

On paper, Lelepa ticks a lot of boxes. It’s got easy access from Australia, family-friendly design, all-inclusive convenience, and if it’s done right, it will be a polished, curated experience.

So in short, yes. If the execution and pricing are right, it could become one of the most in-demand cruise experiences in the South Pacific.
