Life is Definitely Calmer on The Llama Farm

Llama Farmer Shane knows every single one of his llama’s names … all 75 of them … on his 80-acre farm nestled snugly between the foothills of Pine Mountain and the Brisbane River.

How does he tell them apart? I honestly don’t know! I have six chickens on my property and I gave up on individual names long ago. Instead, I now greet them with ”Hey Ladies”, when I tend to them every day.

”Many of the llamas were born and raised here”, said Shane as he hands us each a bright coloured scoop to feed the llamas. ”So they’re extremely friendly around humans, which is really handy if you want to take llama selfies.”

The Llama Farm is home to Queensland’s largest herd of llamas! If that isn’t awesome enough, the farm is also home to donkeys, miniature ponies, miniature goats, sheep, turkeys, peacocks, a giant flemish rabbit and a pair of fluffy Maremma dogs.

The farm itself is rural bliss, with gently rolling hills and llamas dotting the paddocks. There is no such thing as crowds here and the Pine Mountain air is clean. Life is definitely calmer on The Llama Farm and I feel it the second we step out of the car!

Visiting the farm is an experience like no-other! Shane currently offers two different experiences by way of the Guided Llama Walk or the Faces of the Farm Tour. We joined in the Faces of the Farm Tour and had a great time.

The Faces of the Farm Tour

The Faces of the Farm Tour is suitable for families with younger kids. Not only will you get to be up close and personal with the llamas, but you will also get to meet many of the other farm animals.

Shane showed my son how to make a ”turkey” noise that sets all the turkeys off in a chaotic song of ”gobble gobble”, which of course makes their snoods (the red fleshy bits hanging off the turkey’s beaks) go wobble wobble. We all found this hilarious.

The beautiful peacocks lit up the yard when the sun hit their blue and green finery and they surprised us with a rather loud and annoying honking sound. Turns out they’re much nicer to look at than listen to.

The miniature ponies and baby donkeys were a big hit and of course, meeting Lucy and Lola, the large, fluffy Maremma dogs responsible for guarding the poultry was a lot of fun.

Having a cuddle with the little donkey … too cute!

The Guided Llama Walk

The Guided Llama Walk is a unique experience but walkers will need to be 10 years of age to lead a Llama, making it more suitable for families with older kids or couples/singles.

Visitors can choose their own special llama to walk on a lead along a purpose-built trail on the farm, which borders the upper reaches of the Brisbane River.
