Planning a trip to Wilsons Prom? You need to stay at Yanakie Caravan Park

Only five minutes drive to the entrance of Wilsons Promontory, Yanakie Caravan Park is the best place to stay at, camp, roll up your motorhome or park your caravan while enjoying the fantastic national park. Yeah, I know, I know…there is National Park camping within Wilsons Prom. However, booking into the national park camping is near impossible as it works on a lottery system and registering is only open during a small window each year.

The Yanakie Caravan Park is seriously one of the best caravan parks I have ever stayed at. Why? The sites are big and grassy, there’s a massive grass area with a playground in the middle, and the facilities are large, modern and clean. The icing on the cake? The sheltered beach that the caravan park fronts is stunning at sunrise and sunset. Not to mention the cute little bunnies hopping around the amenities block every evening.

This is not one of those places that you ‘just sleep at’. Yanakie Caravan Park is a top spot to hang out as well.

Camping & caravan sites

Premium sites are located really close to the foreshore and all offer drinking water. They’re suited to caravans and motorhomes but either way, the views are incredible, particularly at sunrise and sunset.

Both powered and unpowered regular sites are scattered around the park but only some offer drinkable water. Don’t worry if you don’t get a site with water, there are other taps you can access for drinking.

All sites at Yanakie Caravan Park are large and most are thoughtfully placed with trees and shrubs separating your site from your neighbours.

Prices per night:

  • Unpowered: Off peak $33 – Peak $42
  • Powered: Off peak $41.50 – Peak $55
  • Premium: Off peak $48 – Peak $60

Cabins

Don’t have a caravan or feel like tent camping? Don’t worry, there is a choice of cabins on offer here as well. Sea view cabins have two bedrooms (sleeps up to five), are self-contained with an ensuite and look out towards Corner Inlet and Wilsons Prom.

The couple’s cabins at Yanakie Caravan Park feature a double bed, ensuite, kitchen, lounge/dining area, TV, and an outdoor setting.

Standard cabins sleep up to six in two bedrooms. These are self-contained but there is no ensuite, so they are close to the amenity block.

Prices per night:

  • Standard cabin: Off peak $99 – Peak $125
  • Couples cabin: Off peak $145 – Peak $180
  • Seaview cabin: Off peak $145 – Peak $185

Facilities at Yanakie Caravan Park

We were pretty impressed with the facilities at Yanakie Caravan Park and both the laundry and camp kitchen was much appreciated at this point of our trip. The are two main amenities blocks and both of them are large with both showers and toilets.

Families will love the centrally located playground surrounded by a large grassy area. It’s large enough to kick a footy around or set up a game of cricket.

The park is pet friendly and has a kiosk.

What to do in the region

  • Visit Wilsons Promontory, the southernmost tip of mainland Australia. It’s free to enter the national park which boasts fantastic beaches, coastlines and wildlife views. Hikes range from short to multi-day and there are plenty of free nature-based activities to do here.
  • Seek out Agnes Falls to see the highest single-span waterfall in Victoria, cascading a beautiful 59 metres over a series of rocks. Expect to see wildlife, and the viewing area can be found around 200 metres from the carpark.
  • Walk the Yanakie/Duck Point loop, a two-kilometre or so circuit walk with great views of Wilsons Prom and Corner Inlet. Find the entrance to the track right near the park close to the boat ramp at the end of Foley Road near the Yanakie Caravan Park.
  • Get out on the water at Shallow Inlet for a swim, play, sail, boat or fish.

Highs and lows of Yanakie Caravan Park

Highlights of Yanakie Caravan Park

We loved Yanakie Caravan Park for the central playground, sheltered oceanside location and the large campsites, which feel more private than most caravan parks due to the thoughtful placement of shrubs and small trees.

What could be better

One of the amenities blocks has no shelf to put your stuff while you’re showering, just a hook on the back of the door. I know this is trivial, but it makes it difficult for families as you can only hang so much on the one hook to keep it high and dry.

Also, reception didn’t have coins for their laundry. It’s not a quick drive to the shops to swap coins here either.
